University of Pittsburgh, Division of Infectious Diseases

Carlene A. Muto, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor, Director of Infection Control and a member of the ID Epidemiology Research Unit. She received board certification in internal medicine and Infectious Disease. She received a MS of Epidemiology during her ID training at University of Virginia. Her research interests include reduction of heath-care associated infections (HAIs). She is particularly intested in the control of , multidrug resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterocci (VRE) and co-authored the SHEA guideline for Preventing Nosocomial Transmission of Multidrug-Resistant organisms.

Dr. Muto has conducted studies to better characterize issues related to the emergence of a novel strain of C. difficile. She is interested in Information Technology as it relates to electronic identification of hospital-acquired infections. She has participates in many patient safety committees and a variety of CDC related activities. She is a member of SHEA, APIC, IDSA and ASM. She has chaired the Pittsburgh Regional Health-vcare Intiative (PRHI) Nosocomial Infection Advisory Committee, served as a member of the PHC4 HAI Advisory Panel and Office of Health-care reform Patient Safety Committee. She has successfully championed a BSI initiative that has resulted in a >70% infection reduction.
